Buddha Footprint at Khao Khitchakut 2012

Very crowed footprint area in the morningI took the trek to Khao Kitchakut again this year. Khao Kitchaku is a buddhist retreat in Thailand unique to the whole country. The retreat centers around a huge buudha footprint on the top of the mountain. This is my second trip up the sacred mountain, so I knew what do expect.

For me, this year the trip was totally different for we decided to go at night, when the day is cooler, leaving Bangkok around 8 pm and arriving at Wat Khao Khitchakut around midnight. From Wat Khao Khitchakut (the temple at the base on the mountain) you take a very extreme ride on the back of a four wheel drive pickup truck. The ride reminded me of a roller coaster where the trucks are well choreographed, exchanging sides of road at specific turns. I tried very hard to get a good video of the ride. The video below shows the well choreographed trucks but doesn’t do justice to the quick elevation changes we experienced in a short time. I arrived at the Buddha foot print area around 2 am but this is not the end of the trek, the trail continues beyond the sacred area for quite a distance. By the time I got to the end and returned to the footprint area it was about 5 am and we took rest there. At sunrise I was amazed to see the area surrounded by thousands of worshipers. We took the walk down the mountain, quite exhausted when we reached our car at 8 am.
