Koh Larn Monkeys

Koh Larn MonkeyThere are monkeys in a lot of places in Thailand, usually running free but staying close to places people go to get a free ride as much as possible.  Whenever i encounter them I like to spend the time to get some good photos.  I think they can be very photogenic.  Monkeys can also be fascinating to watch, sometimes immensely funny and a few can be scary.   While I was taking these photos of a troop of Monkeys on the Island of Koh Larn, a monkey jumped on top my head and I had to show quite a bit of restraint to not reach up and throw him off.  I was able to gently coaxed him down and then continued taking my photos.

Doi Inthanon National Park Part 2 The King and Queen Twin Chedis

King and Queen's Chedi

Phra Mahathat Chedi Nabhametaneed and Phra Mahathat Chedi Naphapholphumsiri are two amazing monuments built on top of Doi Inthanon mountain in the shape of twin pagodas. The pagodas are very large and hugely impressive, it is as if they are standing guard over Thailand's northern boarders. The pagodas are surrounded by wonderful gardens and each offers spectacular views of the mountains, especially at sunset.

Amphawa Floating Market

Amphawa Floating Market

The floating markets of Thailand are quite well known and deeply set in Thai culture. The Amphawa Floating Market is one of the original floating markets, of which there are few. Most of the floating markets in Thailand today are recent replicas but still fun to explore. In years gone by the river was truly Thailand's life blood, providing a simple means of getting food and products to the people living along the river. You can get a glimpse of this lifestyle by visiting the Amphawa Floating Market located a little more than an hour south of Bangkok.

The photos of the older Thai lady rowing her boat through the market exemplifies the cultural style of river life.

Boats on Prachuapkirikhan Bay

Boats on Prachuapkirikhan Bay
Boats usually make interesting subjects for my photos while traveling throughout Thailand and these boats in Prachuapkirikhan Bay were no exception. Prachuapkirikhan Bay is a moon shaped bay located south of Hua Hin, on the peninsula that is shared with Myanmar. The bay is primarily home to Thai fishermen with a military base on the southern end. Overlooking the bay is a temple high on top of a hill, I am sure giving the villagers luck as they go to sea. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Doi Inthanon National Park - Part 1

Park Welcome Sign

Doi Inthanon National Park is the "roof of Thailand", having the highest "spot" in this fascinating tropical country.  Situated about an hours drive from the northern province of Chang Mai, the park contains many beautiful vistas overlooking exotic, subtropical forests. Life in the forests here is quite different from that found further south, due to the colder influence of the Himalayan mountains.  I found you need at least 2 days to get a true flavor of this magnificent park that has tall majestic waterfalls, vast amazing views, and hiking trails through lush subtropical forests. The highest "spot" in the park weighs in at 2,565 meters above mean sea level and the temperature often dips below freezing in Thailand winter months.  When i was there the temperature plummeted to 5 degrees Celsius and I was cold for a am quite accustomed to the hot tropical days of Thailand.

Chinese New Year 2012

Chinese New Year 2012

I always try to make the Chinese New Year celebration in Bangkok’s Chinatown every year that I have lived in Bangkok and I was not disappointed this year.  There was fun and festivities for Thais and foreigners of all ages.  The Chinatown gate was lit up in amazing glory and there was staged shows of traditional Chinese entertainment.

The Lotus Museum of Pathum Thani

Lotus Museum of Pathum Thani

The Lotus Museum at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, in Pathum Thani Thailand is a must see for a quick side trip on your way north out of Bangkok towards Ayutthaya. The museum is outside and has hundreds of varieties of lotus to view in both decorated pots and in natural water settings having a number of well maintained ponds throughout the property.

The ponds that make up the museum are also the home to a number of interesting insects (which I always like to photograph).
