In Thailand, a spirit house is a shrine placed to protect the spirit of a house or business, and is traditionally placed in an prominent spot, such as the front corner of a property. The spirit house is in the form of a miniature house or temple, and is elevated on a pillar, about chest high.
The purpose of the spirit house is to provide a shelter for spirits so they won't cause problems for the occupants of the building. The shrines often include images of people and animals. People will often leave food, water and other gifts for the spirits to ensure the spirits remain happy.
